Clarity is the key
to effective design

Hi, I’m Stuart Luff, a British graphic designer with over 20 years experience in the graphic design industry. Specialising in design for print and brand identity projects, I work with many clients large and small to create effective and memorable identities to allow their businesses to grow.

If you need a new logo for your business or a total rebrand complete with new identity guidelines and all related collateral then get in touch. On top of the logo and identity work I also work with existing identities to create adverts, brochures, booklets, magazines, business stationery and more. Simply get in touch to find out how I can help you.

Most of my career has been in the publishing sector where I have worked on many different publications over the years, ranging from monthly lifestyle magazines, to weekly newspapers and annual catalogues. Responsible for the design, layout and production of these publications along with thousands of printed adverts.

If you need an advert creating for an existing publication or you require someone to put together your own publication I can help organise, design and produce everything you need.

Working freelance I am able offer my clients a much more personal approach as opposed to a big design agency which will demand much more of your time and inevitably cost a lot more too.

You will communicate directly with myself, the designer, and there will be no huge meetings with account handlers, marketing directors and multiple designers etc. If we need to meet up we can do so over a coffee but quite often a simple phone call is enough to get the job done. I can work flexibly to suit your needs.

My design philosophy is that design should be timeless and not be based on a fleeting trend or style that will become dated and ineffective the moment the trend passes. Timelessness is achieved through keeping things simple and making the content the most important element in the design hierarchy. Clarity is the key to effective design.

Complicated
simplicity

Legend has it that Pablo Picasso was sketching in the park one day when a bold woman approached him.

“It’s you — Picasso, the great artist! Oh, you must sketch my portrait! I insist.”

So Picasso agreed to sketch her. After studying her for a moment, he used a single pencil stroke to create her portrait. He handed the women his work of art.

“It’s perfect!” she gushed. “You managed to capture my essence with one stroke, in one moment. Thank you! How much do I owe you?”

“Five thousand dollars,” the artist replied.

“B-b-but, what?” the woman sputtered. “How could you want so much money for this picture? It only took you a second to draw it!”

To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.”

When you hire a designer today, you do it for their knowledge and experience, not their skills using a particular tool.

Anyone can learn to use a computer and design software, but not everyone has the knowledge and experience to provide value for money to the client.

The value does not only lay in what you see on the page. It is predominantly what you do not see where the value resides the most.

While a design may look simple to look at, in essence it is an incredibly complex process to distil everything down to such an elegant and simple solution.

The majority of a designers work is internal. They think, they process and they mentally discard things until they arrive at the final solution. Just because a design is simple does not mean that less thought has gone into it or that it holds less value. It is in-fact worth far more, it will last longer and will, as a result, be far more effective!

What people
are saying

"Stuart was very patient with my poor knowledge when he worked on my project which was a great success. He explained everything I needed to know, nothing was too much trouble for him when I needed changes making and his aftercare has been brilliant. I would not hesitate to use his service again.”

Deafconnect

“A huge thank you for helping me create the perfect brand, logo, business cards and leaflets for my business. Your professionalism, skill and knowledge made the whole process so easy! It was a pleasure to work with you and I look forward to working together again in the very near future.”
